IRS Collections Division ends their hibernation

San Mateo, CA: The IRS Collections Division says: "Bear with Us---letters are a-comin'"

The IRS recently announced that certain collection notices that were paused during 2022 while the IRS caught up on a massive pandemic-related backlog will resume.  IRS letters and notices began flowing out at the end of May and will continue at a managed pace through the Summer.

Among the mailings that will be coming our way are balance due notices and unfiled tax return notices among others.  Additional notice categories that are forth coming include:

  • CP59, Unfiled Tax Return(s) – 1st Notice;
  • CP259, Return Delinquency (business taxpayers);
  •   CP80, Unfiled Tax Return;
  • CP516, Unfiled Tax Returns – 2nd Notice;
  • CP518, Final Notice – Return Delinquency;
  • CP501, Balance Due – 1st Notice;
  • CP503, Balance Due – 2nd Notice;
  • CP504, Final Balance Due Notice – 3rd Notice, Intent to Levy; and
  • 2802C, Withholding Compliance Letter.

Many of these notices have strict deadlines to respond.  Failure to adequately respond will lead to additional penalties, interest, and loss of taxpayer options to find collection alternatives.

Bottom line:  Open your mail and  get help from a tax professional  when dealing with the IRS.
